Best Hikes in Stowe VT and Smuggler’s Notch

1. Make the Trek Up Mount Mansfield

Distance: Varies
Trail Difficulty: Difficult

With a stunning summit view of the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain, Mount Mansfield is one of the most adored mountains in VT. The distance of your hike up Mount Mansfield varies depending on just how high you want to go. Trail distances can vary from just over a mile to more than three, and, you can gain anywhere from 600 to 2600 feet of elevation depending on which trail you choose.

2. See History and Nature on the Mill Trail

Distance: ~1.5 miles one-way
Trail Difficulty: Easy

The Mill Trail starts at Notchbrook Rd just outside of Hemlock Forest. This scenic trail is one of the best hikes near Stowe VT for history buffs because you get to see the Old Mill Site and Blacksmith Shop and other historic structures along the way.

3. Take the Bingham Falls Hike

Distance: ~0.2 miles one-way
Trail Difficulty: Easy

Bingham Falls is a prime attraction in Smuggler’s Notch State Park. The trail to get to this picturesque waterfall is short and relatively easy. The trailhead starts just off Mountain Road where you will find free parking alongside the road. While this is considered an easy trail, wear good shoes and watch out for slippery slopes. Some edges of the trail have steep drops, so this is not the best hike for those with no hiking experience. Bingham Falls is only about a quarter-mile from the trailhead. Therefore, this is one of the best hikes near Smugglers Notch if you don’t have a lot of time to kill.

4. Check Out the Sterling Pond Trail

Distance: ~2 miles one-way
Trail Difficulty: Moderate

Also considered one of the best hikes near Smugglers Notch, the two-mile hike to Sterling Pond is well worth the steps. Sterling Pond is a calm and quiet body of water tucked into the mountains, so you do have a bit of a climb to reach the water. The trail can be a bit treacherous with rocks underfoot and some steep inclines.
